Accountability for social performance is shared across all areas of the business. Significant resources are being invested in the establishment of Syrah Resources social governance architecture aligned to international standards to ensure a planned and considered approach is adopted in building our internal capability and to inform program delivery and stakeholder engagement.

Our commitment to social performance runs deeper than “it is the right thing to do”. The Balama Graphite Project is a long-life asset and the Company recognises that establishing a solid social platform now, with a key focus on local employment, will help maintain the Company’s social license to operate over the long-term.

Our Local Development Agreement (LDA) outlines the Company’s commitment to social programs over the course of the mine concession. Program delivery will be centered on three key areas: Physical Projects, Local Employment & Training and Health Promotion. Integral to the LDA is the establishment of the Community Consultative Committee, whose role is to ensure our social initiatives are aligned with the needs of our Host Communities at all times.

Syrah Resources is partnering with the National Institute of Vocational Training and Employment (INEFP) to establish the Balama Training Centre. The aim of this facility is to improve the employability of members of our Host Communities by equipping them with skills desirable to a multitude of industries including agriculture, education and construction.

The Balama Graphite Project will play a pivotal role in driving local economic development in the Balama District and this is reflected in the views of the Balama District Administrator in a recent interview with the Company:

We are currently implementing our Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) that involves the relocation of a number of farms which overlapped land on the company’s mining lease. To date, the program has been a great success and is being recognised in Mozambique as a leading example of how such programs should be implemented.

Social performance is reported regularly to the Company’s Sustainability Committee.
