Syrah Resources Limited (ASX Code: SYR) is an Australian resource company with a vision to become a long term and sustainable mining company through the successful discovery or acquisition of mineral deposits, and the development of mining projects into production.
In a new strategic shift for the Company, in November 2011 Syrah announced that it had executed a Share Purchase Agreement to acquire Jacana Resources Ltd from its shareholders. Jacana is an unlisted Australian company with a substantial and diverse portfolio of southeast African exploration projects. The Jacana acquisition will give Syrah immediate access to a large exploration portfolio with diversified mineral exposure in highly prospective geological terrains in southeast Africa.
Jacana Acquisition
Jacana has 11 exploration projects located in Tanzania (4), Mozambique (3), Zambia (2) and Botswana (2). The total portfolio licence area of 5,889km2 has strong potential for graphite, vanadium, uranium, coal, rare earth elements, base metals, precious metals and heavy mineral sands.
The projects range from more advanced exploration projects with ore grade drill intersections to grass roots tenements. The most advanced project is Balama, a high grade graphite / vanadium occurrence in Mozambique. Appraisal activities have already commenced at Balama to determine its economic potential.
A significant coincident nickel/copper anomaly has previously been identified at the Mavuzi Project in Mozambique, and has never been followed up. The Mavuzi licence is also anomalous in rare earth elements, molybdenum, gold and silver.
Several high quality uranium prospects in the portfolio have the potential to host world class uranium deposits. The prospects are of similar styles and are located in sedimentary basins which host many of the major uranium deposits of southern and eastern Africa. The most advanced uranium project is also in the Mavuzi licence area with grades up to 4,600ppm U3O8 in historical drilling.
Saudi Arabia
Syrah has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Arabian Nubian Resources Pte Ltd to sell a 90% stake in Syrah's Saudi Arabian subsidiary which holds 26 applications for Exploration Licences in Saudi Arabia. Syrah has made applications for Exploration Licences covering known mineral occurrences as well as exploration targets driven by greenfields exploration concepts. These applications are being processed by the Deputy Ministry for Mineral Resources in Saudi Arabia.
Lyndhurst, South Australia
In South Australia, the Lyndhurst project area comprises two tenements that contain many historical workings located on occurrences of copper mineralisation. The Lyndhurst Project is under joint venture with Zurich Resources. Zurich has defined high priority drill targets from recently completed geophysical surveys exploring for copper sulphide mineralisation.
